LOGAN — An apartment fire that caused $80,000 in damage Monday was caused by a discarded cigarette, fire officials said.
The apartment, a townhome-style duplex located at 124 W. 1100 North in Logan, sustained extensive damage after the cigarette ignited an exterior deck, Logan City Fire Marshall Craig Humphreys said.
Only one of the two units was occupied, Humphreys said. A man was asleep in the basement when the fire started and was able to exit the structure. The adjacent unit was being remodeled and sustained minor damage.
Fire crews were alerted to the fire at 3:58 a.m. and when they arrived, the flames had begun to spread to neighboring structures. Crews were able to contain the fire from spreading further and neighboring structures sustained minor, exterior damage.
"The siding was on fire and broken windows along that side," Humphreys said.
Humphreys said the fire breached the apartment, causing heat, smoke and fire damage to the upper floor and significant water damage to the basement.
Tenants in the neighboring structures were evacuated but were allowed back into their homes within an hour of fire crews arriving.
