(KSL News) -- Tonight's episode of E.R. profiled a debilitating disease that's a reality for many Utahns.

"My name is Alan Alderman, I have ALS and cannot speak."

Utahn Knows Reality of Lou Gehrig's Disease

ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, often strikes in the prime of life, as it did Alan Alderman. Eighty-percent of ALS patients die within five years. Alderman's form is slower moving, but it's been a life changing struggle for him and his family.

Alan Alderman, Lou Gehrig's Patient: "Obviously, when you're facing a terminal illness, family becomes that much more important to you."

He volunteers to help others diagnosed with ALS and hopes awareness and research will eventually lead to a cure.
