LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Cache County officials are considering a plan to reduce the number of inmates that could include releasing some prisoners.
The Logan Herald Journal says the jail has more than 330 inmates, nearly 30 more inmates than the proposed maximum capacity.
Sheriff Lynn Nelson says the plan would set limits for different types of prisoners, including those waiting for a trial, people serving sentences for misdemeanors, state felons and federal inmates.
If needed, the county jail would release prisoners to reduce population. Nelson says the first releases would be given to people awaiting trial for a non-violent misdemeanor. After that, non-violent felons would be released and then those who have at least 90 percent of their sentence.
County Councilman Val Potter says he would prefer criminals serve their full sentences.
