LOGAN -- A Cache County Jail inmate assaulted a fellow inmate Saturday, sending the man to the hospital and marking the fourth assault by an inmate across the state in the span of a month.

Rocky Rivera, 18, was sent to the hospital with lacerations to his face and back after inmate Fernando Infante, 19, assaulted the man with "a homemade edged weapon," according to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff's Office.

The men were being moved around the facility and were in a common area of the jail when the assault occurred.

Infante was taken into custody and the jail was placed on lockdown while officials searched other cells for weapons. They did not locate any additional weapons.

The incident is under investigation.

Additional information on how the man knew each other and what may have prompted the stabbing is currently unavailable.

Rivera was in custody while awaiting sentencing on a second-degree felony possession with intent to distribute drug charge. His sentencing is currently scheduled for May 3.

Infante was serving 185 days in jail for acquisition, possession or transfer of a card, a class A misdemeanor. He was sentenced to 365 days jail on April 12, but the rest of his jail time was suspended. He was to have a sentence review June 28.

Three similar attacks have taken place this month in the Utah State Prison. On April 27, Alfonso Lopez, 27, was killed after an altercation with his cellmate. There were no obvious stab wounds and the man's death remains under investigation.

On April 19, a 25-year-old inmate was stabbed by his cellmate in the area of the prison that typically houses gang members. That inmate survived.

On April 10, a 29-year-old man was stabbed two to three times in the torso with an unknown weapon in a commons area of the prison.
