Mary Richards, KSL NewsradioState education officials are looking at banning junk food in all of Utah's schools. The state school board will discuss the options tomorrow.
The vending machine is a tempting option for many kids who want a snack or don't like what's on the lunch menu. But vending machines are often full of junk food.
Luann Shipley, Child Nutrition Programs director at the State Office of Education, says, "We need to create an atmosphere where kids learn to like those things that are really good for them."
Shipley says they don't want to take away schools' revenue from vending machines. They just want to provide more nutritional foods in those machines.
The board will consider drafting a rule requiring healthy choices in all Utah schools by 2012.
