SALT LAKE CITY -- If you're looking to train for a long race -- such as a 5K or even a marathon -- but not sure how to go about it, well, now there's an app for that.

Getting ready for his regular jog, Chris Kluge attaches his iPhone, puts in his ear buds and hits play.

But he's not just listening to his favorite music. He has a "running coach in his ear."

I designed this routine for people who have already run a 10K and want to improve their 10K time. And believe me, I know a little something about running.

"I designed this routine for people who have already run a 10K and want to improve their 10K time," said Jeff Galloway, former Olympian. "And believe me, I know a little something about running."

Galloway, an avid runner with over 130 marathons under his belt, writes books and conducts training classes for thousands of runners everywhere around the world.

Now, he's increasing his reach with an iPhone App, created by the Salt Lake firm, Lolo Fitness.

His method is "running doesn't have to be painful," no matter how long of a race you're training for.

Designers of Lolo Fitness recently released a 10K training app, following the 5K training app that was released in March.

"Start Walking," said Galloway. "Go for three minutes. Start now."

While Galloway guides you on your run -- outside or on a treadmill -- the program keeps track of your progress. Every training regimen changes on a daily basis, helping you meet specific goals. Additionally, the app allows you to adjust the settings, allowing Galloway to push you harder or to go easier on you.

And Galloway will always remind you of proper technique.

"So you'll just be running along, and he'll have a little tip: ‘Hey remember to shorten your stride; that will protect your knees,' " said Chris Kluge, content director of Lolo Fitness. "And you say, ‘oh right, right. Forgot about that. Thanks Jeff!' "

Another feature of the training app is something called "beat synch technology."

No matter what the pace is -- running or walking -- the music will always match your stride. And that helps to keep you motivated.

The Lolo Fitness apps are currently available on Apple platforms only. The company is starting to work on the half marathon training program.
