Coco Warner ReportingToday, millions of Americans are celebrating the life Martin Luther King, Junior. Here in Utah people are honoring his dream in many different ways.

Forty two years ago, Martin Luther King Junior delivered his famous speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. For the last 20 years, we've celebrated his life and dream for equality with a federal holiday.

Utahns Celebrate Martin Luther King Day

Paul Hamilton, Ed. D: "Martin Luther King, for those of us who were in school at that time, was a major, major hero and inspiration."

At today's luncheon, the NAACP gave away several scholarships and invited guest speaker, author Paul Hamilton, to address the group, who was hopeful the youth in attendance would carry King's torch.

Paul Hamilton: "I want to commend the students who are here because they are the present. We always say they're the future-- no, they are right now!"

In Provo, on the Brigham Young University campus, students honored Dr. King's memory by participating in a community outreach day. They knitted hats for Russian orphanages and even gave blood.

Utahns Celebrate Martin Luther King Day

BYU is also sponsoring "The Walk of Life"-- a candlelight processional that begins at the Carillon Bell Tower and ends at the Wilkinson Center on campus.
