SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah's colleges are trying to replace 15-seat passenger vans with smaller vehicles. The efforts are in response to the rollover accident of a 15-passenger van that killed eight students and an instructor from Utah State University in September.
Commisssioner of Higher Education Rich Kendell says that rollover persuaded higher education leaders to start replacing the vans now instead of waiting on the regualr replacement schedule.
Since the September accident, U-S-U's entire 50-vehicle fleet, including about 40 vans, has been grounded for student use. All state schools are in the midst of creating clear policies on whether they will continue to use the 15-passenger vans.
