BRIGHAM CITY — Police have confirmed the deaths of three people in a possible murder-suicide at an independent care center.

A husband, wife and an adult child all died from wounds sustained by rifle fire inside a unit at the Discovery Place facility, 360 W. 900 North, Brigham City police said.

Police have identified the victims as 58-year-old James Hall, 57-year-old Kathy Hall and 35-year-old Erik Hall. All three lived at the facility.

"It looks like a murder-suicide," said Brigham City Police Lt. Mike Nelson.

Stephanie Weeks, a night janitor at the center who said she knew all three victims well, said the health of the mother and her son had recently declined. She thought that the family had also recently lost their house.

"They're a very loving family. This is a complete shock," Weeks said.

During the shooting, a bullet or gunpowder hit the sprinkler in the family's unit and triggered the sprinkling system, police said.

A nearby school was not put on lockdown, but the principal was informed of the shooting.

Those who live near the center said there have never been any problems with it before. But Curtis Weaver, who lives the closest to it, said it's hard to know what's going on there. This case concerns him.

"You just don't know who comes in and out of there, what their backgrounds are. There's really nothing I can do about it except just watch out for my own family," Weaver said.

Officials at Discovery Place say they do background checks on all of their residents.

Police say they are still working on an exact motive, but they believe the father did the shooting. Investigators found a note but are not saying what was written in that note.
