UTAH COUNTY -- More teens and pre-teens are getting smart phones and even things like iPads. School officials are working to adapt their policies to include Internet use on those devices.

It happens every January -- more toys and higher-tech devices appear in schools. The Alpine School District is now updating its rules to include Internet accessed on iPhones, iPads, laptops, etc. Spokeswoman Rhonda Bromely says students and staff may not use the Internet for illegal or inappropriate purposes.

"People need to understand that when they are on school property, whether it's a school computer or not that you are using, the same rules do apply," she said.

Those rules regulate content and usage, but also say students have no expectation of privacy associated with the use of the Internet, meaning their smart phone, for example, could be taken and checked.

Bromley says the board is expected to approve the new rules next month.

Students and employees are welcome to use their outside devices to log onto the school's filtered Internet. The policy also says parents of elementary students would sign a form, secondary students also would have to sign in the fall.
