Class 5A Boys

Today's First Round

At Weber State University

Upper Bracket

West Jordan61, Granger 43 Final

  • Jordan Loveridge scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and West Jordan overcame a slow start to defeat the Granger Lancers 61-43. The underdog Lancers led by as much as 5 in the first half led by Deng Deng who scored 18 points including a spectacular follow dunk early in the 3rd quarter. The Jaguars would open the 4th quarter with a 14-0 run to take control of the game. "It felt like a playoff game," said West Jordan head coach Scott Briggs. "I don't feel like playoff games are ever easy. We just told our kids to keep battling, keep trying to rebound, keep getting to the free throw line, and try to survive and advance. The 5th ranked Jaguars now advance to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 1 Lone Peak in a rematch of the 2009 state championship.

Pleasant Grove 33, Lone Peak 58 Final

  • Sophomore guard Nick Emery scored 17 points to lead the No. 1 ranked Lone Peak Knights to an easy 58-33 victory over Pleasant Grove in the first round of the 5A state tournament. Knights built a 32-10 lead at the half. Jordan Hamilton had 12 points and 10 rebounds inside for the Knights while freshman T.J. Haws had 15. Cade Wilkes led the Vikings with 15. Lone Peak will advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals where they will face West Jordan in a rematch of the 2009 state championship game.

Alta 41, Fremont 53 Final

  • Fremont center Tate Lewis blocked seven shots to lead the 4th ranked Silverwolves to a 53-41 win over defending state champion Alta. Lewis also scored 31 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Along with teammate Brock Lewis, who had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Fremont was able to control the paint and hold Alta to just 24 percent shooting from the field.

West51, Riverton 41 Final

  • Tyrell Corbin scored 33 points thanks to 5-7 shooting from the three-point line to lead the West Panthers to a 51-41 win over Riverton. Corbin scored the first 8 points of the game and the Panthers led 12-0 but Riverton responded with a 14-0 run to take the lead after the 1st quarter. The Silverwolves had a lead at halftime and held a 32-29 lead after three quarters. But with the game tied at 36 in the 4th quarter Tyrell Corbin took over the game leading a 15-2 run by the Panthers that gave them the victory. West will advance to the quarterfinals Wednesday where they will face 4th ranked Fremont.

Lower Bracket

Brighton63, Viewmont 61 Final (OT)

  • Corbin Miller scored 28 points including the go-ahead bucket in overtime to help Brighton upset Viewmont 63-61. The Bengals led by as much as 19 points but Viewmont, led by center Blake Wilkinson stormed back to tie the game. Wilkinson had 27 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks and had a shot to win before regulation that rimmed out. The Vikings had another chance to win it late in overtime but they turned the ball over. Brighton's Zach Wertz stole the ball and made a layup to give the Bengals a four point lead with 5 seconds left. The Bengals will face Murray in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

Murray52, Copper Hills 38 Final

  • David Collette scored 22 points to lead Murray to a first round win over Copper Hills. The Grizzlies took a 19-18 lead into the locker room but Murray outscored the Grizzlies 24-13 in the final quarter to earn a spot in Wednesday's quarterfinals where they will face Brighton.

Bingham79, Skyline 58 Final

  • Connor Williams had 18 points, 6 steals and two highlight reel dunks in the Miners 79-58 win over Skyline. Logan Parker led the 2nd ranked Miners with 19 points. The Eagles Jaden Jackson scored 19 points and kept his team close in the 1st half. The Miners move on to face American Fork in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

American Fork66, Davis 46 Final

  • Four different Cavemen notched double digits -- Quincy Blair (15 points), Austin Waddoups (13), Alex Ross (11), and Marcel Davis (10) -- as American Fork slowly pulled away in the first-round matchup. The team combined for 14 steals and shot 40 percent from behind the 3-point line. The Darts were led by Trevor Webb's 12 points and Riley Watts' 10 points in the loss.
