SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The state is changing the way it calculates and lists prices for alcohol at liquor stores.
Effective today, price tags on shelves will no longer show the average state sales tax of 6.6 percent.
Instead, the tax will be added at the cash register and it will vary, depending on where the store is located. In Millard County, for example, it will be 5.75 percent. In Alta, it will be 8.1 percent.
Additionally, the 13 percent school lunch tax will now be added to the state markup on alcohol.
Alcohol Beverage Control Commissioner Mary Ann Mantes says the changes are confusing. She voted against them in February, the only one of five commissioners to do so.
