SALT LAKE CITY -- If you have too many parking tickets, a Utah lawmaker thinks your car's registration should be revoked.
Sen. Stuart Reid, R-Ogden, is pushing SB139 that would give the state division of motor vehicles the ability to revoke the car registration of anyone who has four or more unpaid parking tickets that are delinquent for more than 30 days.
"Clearly it will have an affect on anyone who is not paying their tickets. It will send a strong message to them that they need to be responsible with that if it's going to affect their registration of their vehicle," said Reid to the Senate Business and Labor Committee.
The bill would require offenders to not only pay back their parking tickets, but also pay a $100 fine to cover administrative costs of revoking the registration.
Some senators in committee worried about people getting notification before their registration was pulled, but the bill passed through committee and will now be debated on the Senate floor.
Reid says the bill gives cities "real enforcement" of parking tickets. Salt Lake City alone has millions of dollars of unpaid parking fines.
