LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- The Utah State University lab that performed the animal autopsy on the bear that killed a boy this week says the bear appeared to be healthy.
Examination of the bear's tissue samples is expected to conclude today. Pathologists are looking for signs of illnesses like rabies or hepatitis.
But lab director Tom Baldwin says no problems were apparent in the initial autopsy and it's not likely the bear was diseased.
Utah State University's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is the home of Utah's largest branch of the national veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
After wildlife officials killed the black bear that attacked 11-year-old Sam Ives in American Fork Canyon its body was taken to the USU lab.
