Salt Lake Mission serves Christmas dinner to thousands

SALT LAKE CITY -- Thousands of Utahns in need got a free hot meal and a free call home Saturday during the Salt Lake City Mission's Christmas dinner for the homeless.

Volunteers served up heaping helpings of ham, mashed potatoes and desserts while people who came got to pick out clothes and toiletries and call home for free.

"There's a lot of people that have been out on the street. A lot of people who have lost their homes, a lot of people that normally wouldn't be out on the street are homeless this year," said Brad Jaques, Assistant Director of Development for the Salt Lake City Mission. "We just want to let them know that they're loved and that we care about them."

The mission says it served about 2,500 people this year, and it will do the same next year.
