SALT LAKE CITY -- The man who was shot and paralyzed by a neighbor during a Neighborhood Watch dispute appeared in court Thursday.
David Serbeck made an initial court appearance on three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. During the brief hearing, he waived the formal reading of the charges against him and the judge set another hearing date.
Serbeck appeared with his attorney. Both had no comment following the court action.
Serbeck was shot and paralyzed after a dispute with a neighbor, Reginald Campos, in their Bluffdale neighborhood. Campos said he shot Serbeck because Serbeck had been following his teenage daughter.
Campos was convicted in July and is serving three years to life in prison. Campos' attorney had brought up the unrelated allegations against Serbeck, saying they raised questions about his credibility.
Campos' attorney said she was approached by the alleged victim and two other women with similar stories, and they were scared to come forward until recently.
Prosecutors filed the charges against Serbeck in October. They allege he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl in 2006.
Serbeck will return to court on Jan. 18.
