MIDVALE — A 21-year-old woman died Thursday afternoon after the vehicle she was riding in collided with a semitrailer.

The accident occurred after a semitrailer swerved to avoid traffic when it began to slow on northbound I-15 near 7800 South around 1:45 pm, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Todd Johnson said. The semitrailer struck two pickup trucks as it continued to swerve. As it was tipping over, the passenger vehicle the woman was riding in collided with the undercarriage.

Kimberly Jo Christensen was taken by and ambulance to an area hospital in extremely critical condition and later died, Johnson said.

Drivers of the other three vehicles involved in the accident received minor injuries.

UHP spokesman Brian Hyer said traffic was backed up as far as the Point of the Mountain and though there is a tow truck on the scene to remove the semitrailer, he did not know how long it would be before all lanes would be reopened.

The truck had been hauling a load of dried peas. Johnson said he did not know if the truck's load was compromised.
