SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City's school district is taking recycling to new heights and reducing some of the piles at the local landfills.

The district says recycling within the schools has caught on so well that the company it works with, Green Fiber, is asking it to give advice to other districts.

Greg Lebecci, district energy and resource manager, says the district has been able to trim 20 percent of its waste, and that means a lot fewer trips to the landfills.

"We've managed to reduce pretty much each school by one landfill dump on a weekly basis, so that adds up," he says.

The district recycles about 45 tons of paper products per week.

Some three dozen schools participate. Lebecci says it may seem easier to get younger students to take part, but even high school students are getting involved.

The district is now working on a pilot program to recycle waste from its cafeterias.
