SANDY -- Police arrested a man suspected of shooting his girlfriend at a Sandy hotel Sunday night.

According to Sandy police Sgt. Troy Arnold, a couple staying at the Extended Stay America Hotel at 7555 S. Union Park Avenue got into an argument just before 8:30 p.m.

That's when police say the suspect, identified as Colten Jay Olsen, 26, shot his girlfriend in the upper shoulder area and took off on foot. Other guests at the hotel heard gunshots and called police.

"We had several agencies throughout the valley respond and began searching the area with canines," Arnold said. "We had a canine locate him about 45 minutes after the initial 911 call. He was just down the street at a local store."

Police tracked down Olsen near the Walmart at 7250 S. Union Park Avenue and took him into custody. Officers were able to obtain the gun from the suspect.

The woman was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in good condition. Arnold says she was alert and talking to paramedics at the scene.
