OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Transportation officials have shut down State Road 39 over Monte Cristo Summit in Weber and Rich counties because of heavy snow.

The highway had been set to close for the winter on Nov. 30, but heavy snow Saturday prompted officials to shut it down early.

That means the roadway stretching from milepost 37 in Weber County to milepost 56 ini Rich County is closed to all traffic for the winter.

The UDOT says it costs too much to keep it open.
