SALT LAKE CITY -- All early indications had Bingham winning the 5A state championship since the season began. This year's Miners were one of the best teams the state has seen and today was no different, as the Miners rolled over the Fremont Silverwolves, winning 30-7.

The Silverwolves played a good second half, holding the Miners to a field goal, but struggled to move the ball down field.

Fremont made an attempt to close in on the Miners with a four-yard rushing touchdown by Fremont's Nick Vigil and a recovered onside kick, but it was the last time the Silverwolves had any momentum. It was a defensive battle for the remainder of the game.

Fremont showed life early in the first half, recovering a bad snap fumble on the Miners opening drive, resulting in an eventual punt. The momentum quickly faded though as Bingham scored on their next drive with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Brady Measom to put the Miners up 7-0.

Measom quickly scored again on the Miners next drive, with a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Stefan Cantwell, putting the Miners up 14-0 to end the second quarter.

Measom finished the game with four receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns.

The troubles for Fremont got worse after a hard hit took quarterback Woerkom Van out of the game early in the second quarter. After being attended to, Van eventually walked off the field but had to be taken away on a stretcher.

Bingham continued their assault, scoring two more quick touchdowns in the second quarter to make the score 27-0 going into the half. The rest was history as the Miners went on to win their second consecutive 5A championship.

U.S. All-American Harvey Langi of Bingham had 16 carries for 65 yards. Following the game, he said:

"We came out on top and finished our book and wrote our last chapter."

Langi has been extended offers to both BYU, Utah and several Pac-10 teams but has yet to disclose where he plans to play. Wearing a University of Utah wristband, Langi said that he was going to announce what school he was going to play for after the U.S. All American High School game.

The Miners have 13 total players with offers to Division 1 schools.

Bingham Head Coach Dave Peck said: "I don't think there has ever been a team with this many quality individuals. I'm really looking forward to seeing these kids play at the next level."

Final thoughts: A remarkable season by Bingham ends just as predicted. The Miners dealt with the pressure each and every week of being crowned Utah's best high school team ever. It never seemed to get to them as they won every game this season by an average of 40 points. I think it's safe to say that this was the best high school football team this state has ever seen. As for Fremont, they were big underdogs in this game. It didn't help that they played without their to receiver Tate Lewis and a top lineman. They also lost QB Aaron Vanwoerkem to an injury in the first half. Despite the odds and the adversity they faced they battled and fought to the very last snap. With just 12 seniors on their roster they have to be considered one of the early favorites if not the favorite to win the 5A title in 2011.

We are just moments away from kickoff in the 2010 5A State Championship. Bingham is a heavy favorite in this game boasting a roster that features 13 players who have received scholarship offers from Division I college football programs. They are the defending state champions and currently have a 23-game winning streak. Fremont has had a remarkable season winning 11 straight games and the Region 1 title. They have just 12 seniors on their roster and might be an early favorite to win it all in 2011. They get a chance today against mighty Bingham to win it this season. Last year another Region 1 team, Davis, gave Bingham trouble early before the Miners pulled away in the 2nd half. This Fremont team is very similar to that Davis team of last year. We'll see if they can give the Miners a similar challenge.
