SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Horizon coal mine near Price was issued 34 citations for safety violations, with 14 designated significant or substantial, during inspections last month by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The Salt Lake Tribune said Wednesday the results were close to the average given to 15 coal mines nationwide. Inspectors believe significant or substantial violations have the potential to cause a reasonably serious injury or illness.

America West Resources Inc. spokeswoman Dodi Handy says the company had responded to the inspection with an internal audit designed to reduce the rate of significant or substantial problems. The company owns the Horizon mine.

Handy says the mine has not had any lost-time injuries for more than two years.

Regulators say the Horizon mine had high accumulations of coal dust, inadequate maintenance of conveyor belts and belt tunnels, and was not following an approved ventilation plan.
