SALT LAKE CITY -- The 13th-ranked Utah Utes are humming along smoothly, getting healthier. Now with starting quarterback Jordan Wynn back from a sprained thumb on his throwing hand, suddenly it's the school up north with the "two-quarterback deal."
Rod Zundel got some laughs from Ute quarterbacks Jordan Wynn and Terrance Cain and head coach Kyle Whittingham while trying to find out who will be the starting quarterback for this week's game against San Jose State.
Here's what they had to say:
Rod Zundel to Jordan Wynn: What's up with the thumb now?
Wynn: Nothing, it's good, it's feeling good. That's it.
Zundel: Throwing? No problems?
Wynn: Good. No problems at all, doesn't hurt anymore, feels good.
Zundel: Why are you looking at him (Terrance Cain) and smiling?
Wynn: Cause he's funny looking!
Zundel to Terrance Cain: Now Terrance, Kyle (Whittingham) said he (Wynn) is the starting quarterback, but do we need to start a controversy here?
Cain: We don't need to start a controversy, everything's good, we are all team players.
Zundel to Wynn: Are you going to play this Saturday?
Wynn: That's up to the coaches. We don't know yet.
Zundel to Cain: Jordan's not paying attention. Who is starting Saturday?
Cain: Just like he said, we'll leave that to the coaches, man. We don't know.
Zundel to Kyle Whittngham: So are you going to give us anything?
Whittingham: No, we are going to make it a game day announcement. We know what's going on and who's going to play; no sense tipping your hand, doesn't make any sense.
Zundel: (Stares silently at Whittingham)
Whittingham: You're staring at me.
Zundel: I can't get anything from you?
Whittingham: Uhhh, yeah, what do you want?
Zundel to Cain: But how has this relationship been, because obviously both guys want to play. He goes down with an injury, you come in and play well?
Cain: It's just like any other position. I mean, one guy goes down and you've got to replace him and play well. You can't have any slip-ups or anything like that, so you just have to prepare well and be ready at all times.
Wynn: I mean, it works just fine. I wish nothing but the best for this man right here (taps Cain on shoulder pads). He went in and tore it up, he's leading the country in pass efficiency. I was so happy on the sideline watching him play. He took control of this team these last two weeks and it made me nothing but happy.
Zundel: You just hit him on the shoulder pad. Did it hurt your thumb when you did that?
Wynn: No. Look, I will do it again! (hits Cain on pads)
Zundel: I'm not going to get much out of you guys, am I, about who's starting on Saturday?
Wynn: Nah.
Zundel: Is there going to be a two-quarterback rotation Saturday?
Wynn: Nope. Don't know.
Zundel: One more chance.
Cain: I am not going to tell you, man. Just leave it up to the coaches.
Zundel: Tell everybody goodbye and wait till Saturday.
Wynn and Cain: See you guys. See you Saturday. Bye!
