LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Utah State University has a corner on the space-research market.

The Utah school is ranked second nationally for research contracts behind Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University.

New statistics from the National Science Foundation show Utah State University conducted $52 million worth of space research in 2008 for federal agencies and others.

John Hopkins had nearly $72 million worth of contracts.

The Herald Journal reports that much of Utah State's funding comes from contracts, grants and appropriations flowing into the Space Dynamics Lab, which has built strong relationships with NASA and the Department of Defense.
