SALT LAKE CITY -- It's something many shoppers look forward to at their local grocery stores -- case lot sales.

This month, stores across the state are stocking up on bulk items, hoping to convince customers that buying big can save big bucks. At a time when every dollar counts, shoppers say they're looking for the best deals.

Items like canned fruits or vegetables seem to be most popular. Shoppers we talked to say they stock up just to have things on hand for dinner.

"Soups, tomato paste, tomato sauce -- things that I use to prepare dinners with," says shopper Annette Hubley. "Noodles, rice -- things like that."

Greg Bennion is the director of the Harmons grocery store at 3200 S. 1300 East. He says the case lot sales are a great way to bring in the frugal customer.

"People are very conscientious about price and trying to save money, and a case lot is a great way for them to do that," he says. "They can come in and get the foods that they really like at a great value and then have a lot of it on hand for future use."

Harmons officials say the chain buys in bulk so the savings are passed on to customers. That's good news to shoppers like Joan Lewis, who has six children. She shops case lot sales to build up her food storage.

"In the last couple of years they've had, you know, like the number 10 cans for dehydrated things, bulk, food storage stuff and that's really helpful," she says.

The Harmons case lot sale runs through Sept. 19. Other stores like Dan's Foods have case lot sales starting the third week of September. Smith's will start its sale this week.
