PROVO -- A Provo man will spend up to 15 years in prison for trying to kidnap a 4-year-old girl as she played in her babysitter's front yard.
According to the Daily Herald, Judge Darold McDade Monday handed down two concurrent terms of up to 15 years for William Shepherd, 43.
In June, Shepherd pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and pleaded no contest to kidnapping as part of a plea deal.
Police say in March, Shepherd grabbed the girl by her arm outside the babysitter's home near 600 North and 800 West and started to walk away. Her caregiver ran out of the house, fought Shepherd for control of the girl and took her inside the home. Shepherd chased the two and attempted to push his way inside the house while the woman pulled the door closed. He also yelled threats at them.
Police arrested Shepherd at a home a few blocks away. He admitted yelling at the residence but said he did not intend to hurt the child.
