OREM -- Four months ago, Gus von Gostomski of Orem had a massive heart attack. Two co-workers who helped save his life received a KSL High 5 this week.
Von Gostomski was talking to someone at work when he suddenly slumped over in a chair. Instead of waiting for help, that co-worker called over another employee and the two of them took action. Gus's son Tom von Gostomski nominated them for a KSL High 5 for their efforts.
One of the co-workers, Dale Benson, said, "We called 911 while we had Gus on the floor and started to administer CPR. I have a scouting background, Eagle Scout, and all that started flashing back. We got on the phone with 911 and they walked us through the updated CPR. So we administered that."
Tom said, "Thanks to them and the paramedics and everyone who worked on my dad, they were able to bring him back. He was gone for about four to five minutes. They were able to bring him back. So, I couldn't thank them enough for what they did."
Tom calls Dale Benson and Scott Williams his father's guardian angels. He was especially grateful for their kindness while his father was in the hospital.
Dale and Scott are just glad they were able to help a life-long friend.
Scott said, "I would hope that we can all do the same for anyone else. I frankly looked upon it as a huge education experience."
Dale added, "It's interesting to go through an experience like this where someone you care about a lot is dying and you don't know if they're going to come back. All these thoughts rush through you, the adrenaline and so forth. It's a process to go through, that going forward I have a little more courage and confidence if I was in that situation again."
As part of the High 5, Dale and Scott received a $100 gift certificate each from Les Schwab.
