PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. -- A Colorado couple got a major scare when a hungry bear crept into their kitchen Saturday night.

Kathy and Bob Pohly were asleep in their Pagosa Springs home when they heard a loud crash in their kitchen. Bob got up to check it out and ended up face-to-face with a large black bear.

"He just ran back in the room and said, 'There's a bear in the kitchen!'" said Kathy. "He went out in the hallway and turned on the light and there was the bear about three feet away from him, staring at him in the face."

The Pohlys called 911. Within minutes deputies had arrived and found the bear outside eating the Pohly's banana bread.

The bear tried to get back in the house, so deputies shot it three times with a shotgun. The bear then took off running into the woods.

The animal is presumed dead, but deputies haven't found it yet.
