(KSL News) About 50 Utah guardsmen returned today from helping in the Katrina recovery efforts.

450 guardsmen left back in September and this is the first big group to come back. Most were volunteers and a few were selected for specific skills.

They helped in a variety of ways, including crowd control, traffic control, medical support, construction and more.

Maj.Hank McIntire/ Utah National Guard: "It really gives new meaning to the term homeland defense, because we're at home doing this mission. We were thrilled and proud to send them back, and we're very pleased and happy to have them back."

A Utah National Guard spokesman says more troops will be returning in the next few weeks. They should all be back by the end of the month.
