Samantha Hayes ReportingChances are, you may have seen what happened when a truck plowed into an apartment building before the people who lived there found out. Neighbors returned home from work Tuesday afternoon to an enormous hole and extensive damage.
What happened was probably a fluke accident. Police say the driver either blacked out or there was some other medical emergency. But 700 East is a very busy road, and neighbors are concerned about the amount of traffic and the proximity to their building.
Sarai Sanchez says it was scary enough just to hear about what happened to her home while she was at school. "I came from my after-school program and my mother told me. And then tears came down and I was like, ‘This can't be happening.' Yeah. I was really worried."
A man driving a large white pickup truck swerved off 700 East and crashed into one of the apartment units.
Neighbors understand the man driving the truck that crashed into the building was suffering from some kind of medical condition, but many of them say, even still, living this close to a busy road isn't safe.
"It's always busy, always people speeding and honking and always busy," neighbor Joyce Espino said.
Last month Eyewitness News talked to other neighbors who live along 700 East after two major car crashes. They think it's a speeding problem.
Virginia Beane, the resident of the house that was hit, told KSL, "Probably the most dramatic is watching somebody taking out the telephone poll just two houses down, and the phone pole almost hit the house.
This latest incident may have upped Virginia Bean's standard for dramatic. Fortunately, nobody was inside when the truck hit. "Yeah, I wasn't here at the time, and I'm glad everybody is safe, and I hope the driver's safe, too," Bean said.
The driver was taken to the hospital after the crash. One of the neighbors said she heard he'll be OK.
The family living in that house does have somewhere else to stay for the time being.
