SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah is last -- again -- in per pupil spending.

A census report released Monday shows Utah spent $5,765 per pupil in 2008. That's last place among the U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

The nationwide average among public school systems was $10,259 per pupil, with 18 states and D.C. spending more than that and 32 states spending less.

Public school system spending was up 6 percent in 2008.

Just ahead of Utah in per pupil spending were Idaho at $6,931, Arizona, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

The state that spent the most was New York at $17,173, followed by New Jersey, Alaska, D.C. and Vermont.

In 2007 Utah spent $5,683 per pupil, also coming in last.

The ranking is due in part to the fact that Utah has more children per family than any other state.
