SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Utah Transit Authority official says the agency may add a fuel surcharge onto fares starting Aug. 1.

UTA general manager Mike Allegra said Wednesday that the surcharge may go into effect if diesel fuel prices remain more than $3 a gallon on average for the quarter ending June 30. The average price right now is around $3.09 per gallon.

The increase would be 25 cents for an adult cash fare, bringing it to $2.25. The surcharge on a regular adult monthly pass would be $8, making it $75. A paratransit fare would rise to $2.75.

Allegra told the UTA Board of Trustees it is likely the fuel surcharge will be added.
