LONDON, Sep 28, 2005 (UPI via COMTEX) -- An Australian woman who lost both her legs in the London bombing says she will walk down the aisle at her December wedding, The Australian reported Wednesday.
Gillian Hicks, 37, was traveling on the subway headed to Russell Square July 7 when the bomb exploded. Police believe she was one of the people closest to the bomb.
The explosion was one of four suicide-bombings that killed 56 people, including the bombers.
Hicks, the head of public and major events at the British Design Council, suffered severe injuries to her legs, which were later amputated below the knee.
After being fitted with prosthetic legs, Hicks says she and her fiance, Joe Kerr, 47, are determined to keep their December wedding date, and to focus on their future and starting a family together.
Hicks said she made a conscious decision to stay alive when she could not breathe or feel her legs, which were nearly severed at the ankle. Rescuers later carried her out of the carriage by her belt, like a briefcase.
Hicks left the hospital this month after learning to walk unaided, but she will probably have to use a walking stick for the rest of her life.
