Nishi Gupta reporting A semi tanker spills gasoline on I-15 near 7200 South, shutting down part of the freeway and causing a huge clean-up for Haz-mat crews.
The freeway has reopened, but was closed due to concerns the gasoline would spill into the Jordan River. The end result is a huge mess that needs to be cleaned up.
Thirty-one-hundred gallons of fuel spilled, emptying almost the entire tank. Some of it spilled on the brush around the 7200 South and I-15 area. But, most of it went through a storm drain, into the storm system and fell into catch basins known as ponds. That will make clean-up a lot easier.
Capt. Jay Thomas/ Midvale Fire Dept.: "We're going to go ahead and siphon off that extra fuel."
Earlier, there was a concern that fuel may get into the Jordan River.
Capt. Jay Thomas/ Midvale Fire Dept.: "Right now all of our sampling and monitoring equipment says there's nothing down to the river yet."
Just in case, Midvale Fire put booms, long white pads, across the river and along the banks. The material in the pad will absorb any fuel and can stop fuel from going further down the river.
