CEDAR CITY — Cedar City police are investigating whether a man recently accused of stabbing another man over 20 times also made a bomb threat prior to the attack.
Arturo Jose Borges, 34, was charged in 5th District Court on May 15 with attempted murder and aggravated burglary, first-degree felonies; aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, a second-degree felony; and vehicle burglary, a class A misdemeanor.
On May 12, just before 10:30 p.m., police were called to a report of a stabbing "in the area of the trailer park located near 1027 N. Main Street in Cedar City," according to the department.
A man suffering from multiple stab and cut wounds was taken to a local hospital and survived. But it wasn't until the early hours of May 13, when Borges returned to the area, that police were able to take him into custody. Neighbors spotted Borges entering a trailer and called police, who responded with a SWAT team, according to Cedar City police.
Since his arrest, Borges has received additional charges of assault by a prisoner, a third-degree felony, in connection to an alleged assault on May 15; and three counts of propelling a substance at an officer, jail employee or volunteer in connection to alleged incidents on May 17, according to court records.
Detectives are also looking into whether Borges made a call to police about 30 minutes prior to the stabbing and reported a bomb threat in LaVerkin. According to a search warrant affidavit, "the GPS location of the call showed in the same trailer park as where the stabbing took place," and the phone number traced back to Borges.
Investigators also learned that Borges had visited the victim a few times prior to the stabbing and that he was possibly buying marijuana from the victim, the warrant states.
In November 2024, Borges was charged in a separate case in 5th District Court with burglary and assault by a prisoner. During a court hearing in February of 2025, Borges was ordered to be taken to the Utah State Hospital "for restoration services," according to court records.
By May 2025, the court determined that Borges had been "restored to competency," and he pleaded guilty to his charges a month later. He was given a suspended prison sentence of up to five years and placed on probation, and in October 2025 he was granted a transfer to Florida to continue his probation.
