DRAPER -- A change in budget is also a change in strategy for the Canyons School District when it comes to kids and reading.

The Canyons District could no longer afford to subsidize 29 literacy facilitator positions, but no one was fired.
Amber Roderick-Landwards says the district now has achievement coaches instead, for a different way of looking at things.
"The achievement coaches won't be focused on individual teachers or individual students, but rather the whole system," Roderick-Landwards says.
She says some of the former literacy facilitators are now achievement coaches -- one for two schools -- the rest are back in the classroom teaching.
The new system costs less, but more importantly should focus on prevention of reading problems, especially with a new state law requiring some kids to be held back if they don't read at grade level.
