OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- A man who pleaded guilty to starting a 2005 fire that killed one person will be sentenced next month. Jacob Leoncini, 23, pleaded guilty to a count of first-degree murder and a count of second-degree arson as part of a negotiated agreement in 2nd District Court.
Killed in the Nov. 9, 2005, fire at the Canyon Cove apartments was tenant Dana Byrd, 43.
Leoncini told police he left a cigarette butt on a hallway couch because he was angry with a person in another building in the apartment complex. He also said he started another fire in that resident's building earlier in the day. That fire was extinguished.
Leoncini will be sentenced May 15. He faces a possible sentence of five years to life on the murder charge and one to 15 years on the arson charge.
