(KSL News) Ballet West's new artistic director makes his first public appearance in Utah today.

Adam Sklute comes from the renowned Joffrey Ballet, as a dancer for 11 years and most recently as associate director.

He told reporters he plans to become a very visible part of the community. "Ballet West is like Utah. It's a natural beauty, and it's a national treasure, and, like Salt Lake City, it was founded on a vision, an American vision. I want Ballet West to reach out to everyone from all walks of life and share the love that I know we all have for this magnificent art form."

Sklute says he wants to take dance to the people to challenge and inspire audiences.

He officially begins his duties May 1.
