SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Department of Transportation wants you to enjoy the state's attractions this summer, even with all the construction, lane closures and delays.

Together with the Utah Office of Tourism, UDOT has come up with some ways to entice you to get out and travel within the state.

It's called "Stay an Extra Day." Dozens of businesses from Ogden to Southern Utah have agreed to sweeten the deal to vacationers if they stay one extra day during their summer trips.

How to reduce traffic, delays:
  • Shifting your travel time to avoid commute hours
  • Carpooling to school, work and events
  • Starting a vanpool at your office
  • Working from home one day each week
  • Leaving a day early or returning a day later on holiday weekends
  • Walking, biking, or using transit

Bonneville School of Sailing is one of the businesses involved in UDOT's Stay an Extra Day program, offering a discount on their sunset sails.

"People don't realize the quality of sailing we have on Utah Lake," said Todd Frye of Bonneville School of Sailing.

The Stay an Extra Day promotion is focused on the four holiday weekends during the summer. The idea is, if motorists stay one more day at their destination, it will reduce the number of cars traveling on peak holiday and weekend times.

"I know it's going to be a challenge for all of us, and I think that's why UDOT wanted to offer this," Frye said.

If you head up to Park City, you can stay at Silver Star resort three nights for the price of two.

"The summers up here are incredible," said James Ballstaedt with Resorts West. "You are out of the heat of the city up here, the views are beautiful, there's a ton of activities."

The Anniversary Inn in Salt Lake City is offering an extra night for $129 if you stay one night after a holiday, or a Sunday night after any summer weekend.

"That's a really good deal for us, when you consider our higher-end rooms are up to $299," said Julie Degrew with the Anniversary Inn. "We just like people to escape and feel like they are in a totally different place."

If you want to hit a bucket of balls in Weber County, enjoy a free golf cart at Mt. Ogden golf course if you stay and play after any holiday. That makes 18 holes with a cart only $26.

So whether you want to play in the water, mountains or city, UDOT hopes the deals will make it worth sitting in some extra traffic to get there.
