(KSL News) --Dumpster diving is now illegal in the city of Orem.
Last night the City Council approved an ordinance prohibiting anyone from using or looking through a garbage can that is not theirs.
People found going through trash could face misdemeanor charges. The ordinance was proposed to reduce the number of identity thefts in the city -- and to keep people from dumping private garbage into large commercial dumpsters.
Waste workers and law enforcement officers are exempt from the statute.
