SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Utah man has been charged with first-degree murder in the strangling death of his common-law wife earlier this month.

Charging documents say 29-year-old Carlos August Soto-Lopez told police who arrived at his Midvale apartment on May 6 that he had killed the woman.

Charges say the couple's daughters, ages 5 and 8, were in a bedroom when the slaying occurred. Soto-Lopez also has been charged with two counts of third-degree felony commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child.

An autopsy showed 26-year-old Sandra Paulina Hernandez died of strangulation. A cell phone charging cord was found wrapped around her neck. Hernandez's body was found on the couch covered with pillows and a blanket.

Court records did not list an attorney for Soto-Lopez.
