HURRICANE, Utah (AP) -- The city of Hurricane is getting its own dog park.

Rita Longstreet, vice president of advocacy group Because Animals Matter, says her group has taken the first steps toward a park for pooches in the southern Utah city. Land was donated by the city and a firm is offering free design work.

The land for the future park is adjacent to Stout Park. Mayor Tom Hirschi says the city was happy to donate the land. He says the park will be a good addition to the town.

Longstreet says preparation, design and lobbying has taken more than a year and a half.

The park will feature dog water fountains and separate areas for dogs with passive and active personalities.

It could take up to five years for the park to be finished. For now Longstreet says the group is looking to raise about $10,000 to build a perimeter fence.
