WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government is recalling thousands of Simplicity and Graco cribs, warning that babies could suffocate or strangle in them.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the Simplicity recall is linked to at least one death and involves thousands of cribs, possibly hundreds of thousands, though many had previously been recalled for other defects.

The agency says about 217,000 Graco dropside cribs made by LaJobi are also being recalled.

The problem with both types of cribs stems from hardware failures in which a piece of the crib collapses or breaks -- creating a dangerous gap between the mattress and crib where a baby can suffocate or strangle.
