SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A state lawmaker wants to tighten Utah's voter identification laws to get rid of a dozen or more types of IDs that a voter can show to register.
The bill proposed by Rep. Bradley Daw, R-Orem, also would require registered voters to show an approved picture identification on Election Day. And it would eliminate the option for people to be able to show two documents of residency, like utility bills, to prove they live in a voting district.
But Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen says the bill, HB126, isn't necessary and will lower the already low voter participation in the state, a problem a new commission created by Gov. Jon Huntsman is trying to fix.
Provisional ballots would still be allowed, with voters having to show a proper ID later to have their ballots counted.
