SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah House has defeated a proposal that would have admitted seniors into state parks for free.

The failure of Rep. Richard Greenwood's bill is a sign of how tough a budget year the Legislature is facing. Those 70 and older already get into Utah state parks for half-price.

Greenwood, R-Roy, had said the proposal would give seniors an incentive to spend more time with their grandchildren. Greenwood also said most seniors are on a fixed income with no yearly salary increases.

The House voted the measure down 21-53. It would have meant more than $100,000 in lost revenue.

Rep. Christine Watkins, D-Price, said the proposal is a possibility for the future but that the parks can't afford it right now.
