SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Sen. Scott McCoy announced Tuesday he is resigning effective Friday, Dec. 4.
In a statement, McCoy said his time in the senate "has been profoundly rewarding, but also an enormous personal sacrifice."
He referenced the time commitment necessary to be an effective senator, saying it goes beyond the 45 days of the session.
He continued, "I've personally come to a crossroads in my career where I need to devote my full time and energy to the practice of law. To do any less is a disservice to my firm and my family.
"Unfortunately, I simply cannot find the necessary time to be a successful attorney and give the time and energy to fully represent the residents of my district." [CLICK HERE to read the entire statement]
Senator McCoy has represented Senate District 2, which includes Downtown Salt Lake City, Capitol Hill and the Avenues, for the past four years.
McCoy is the state's first openly gay senator and has been actively involved in the gay rights issues. He is an advisory board member for Equality Utah.
He ran the "Don't Amend" campaign in 2004 opposing Utah's constitutional amendment, which defined marriage as being between one woman and one man.
