Olympic gold medalist and LPGA Hall of Famer Lydia Ko moved to within a shot of the lead with a 5-under 67 after two rounds of the HSBC Women's World Championship. The South Korean-born New Zealander has a two-round total of 6-under 138 on the Tanjong course at Sentosa Golf Club. First-round leader A Lim Kim held the lead after 36 holes with a 69 Friday. The steady Ko hit 11 of 14 fairways and 16 of 17 greens in regulation in her bogey-free round. Charley Hull of England (70) was tied for third with Hyo Joo Kim (66), two shots off the lead.

No. 23 Saint Mary's beats Loyola Marymount 58-55 behind Murauskas

Paulius Murauskas scored 18 points, including a pivotal 3-pointer with 30 seconds left, and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead No. 23 Saint Mary's past Loyola Marymount 58-55 for its sixth straight victory. The Gaels, making their first appearance in the AP Top 25 this season, took the lead for good on a putback by Murauskas with 6:08 to play in the first half amid a 16-2 run that made it 24-17 when Mikey Lewis hit a 3 about five minutes later. Mitchell Saxen played his program-record 151st career game for the Gaels, breaking the mark set by Alex Ducas from 2019-24. LeBron James powers the Lakers to 4th straight victory, 111-102 over the Timberwolves

LeBron James had 33 points and 17 rebounds and the Los Angeles Lakers won their fourth straight game, holding off the Minnesota Timberwolves 111-102 on Thursday night. Austin Reeves added 23 points and Luka Doncic had 21 points and 13 rebounds to help the Lakers improve to 14-3 since Jan. 21. Terrence Shannon Jr. led Minnesota with a career-high 25 points. The Timberwolves have dropped three of four and five of seven. The Timberwolves were able to rally back despite Anthony Edwards being ejected  in the third quarter after picking up his second technical foul. Edwards threw the ball into the stands after being ejected. If both technical fouls are upheld, he will be suspended one game for picking up 16 technicals this season.

Barbashev's 4-point night helps Golden Knights hold off Blackhawks 7-5

Ivan Barbashev had two goals and two assists, Vegas scored five times in the first period and the Golden Knights held off the Chicago Blackhawks to win 7-5. The Golden Knights increased their Pacific Division lead to four points over Edmonton. They have won four of their past five games. Chicago has lost four consecutive games, but the Blackhawks got within a goal midway through the third period after trailing 5-1 through one.

Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards suspended 1 game by NBA after picking up 16th technical foul

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has been suspended one game without pay by the NBA after picking up his 16th technical foul of the season during the third quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers. Edwards, who vowed last month that he wouldn't get any more technicals, was called for two of them Thursday night and automatically ejected. He will sit out Friday when the Timberwolves visit the Utah Jazz. NBA rules state a player receives a one-game suspension after picking up 16 technical fouls in a season. For every two additional technicals, the suspension will increase by one game.

Troy Terry and Ryan Strome lead the surging Ducks' rally for a 5-2 victory over Canucks

Frank Vatrano, Cutter Gauthier and Ryan Strome scored in the second period and the surging Anaheim Ducks beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 for their fifth consecutive home victory. Jackson LaCombe got a 4-on-4 goal late in the third period for Anaheim and Troy Terry added an empty-net goal to wrap up the Ducks' eighth win in 11 games. Terry and Strome both finished with a goal and two assists. Tyler Myers and Pius Suter scored in the first period for the Canucks, who then allowed five unanswered goals to fall to 1-3-0 on their five-game road trip.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 28 points, pulled down a season-high 19 rebounds and dished out seven assists as the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Denver Nuggets 121-112 on Thursday. Denver's Nikola Jokic shot 13 of 16 and had 32 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. Jokic now has 27 triple-doubles in the 53 games the three-time MVP has played this season. This was the first matchup of the season between these two multiple-MVP winners. The Bucks play at Denver on March 26. Brook Lopez added 22 points as the Bucks earned their fifth win in their last six games.

Boston's lone goal came from David Pastrnak with 9:56 remaining. The Bruins pulled goalie Jeremy Swayman with 90 seconds remaining, but couldn't force overtime. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Islanders. Swayman made 18 saves for Boston, which has dropped five straight including with the last three coming since the NHL season resumed following the 4-Nations Face-off.

Brenen Lorient scored 16 points off of the bench to help lead the North Texas Mean Green over the Florida Atlantic Owls 71-61. The Mean Green are now 21-6 on the season, while the Owls dropped to 15-13.

Argentina's Racing wins at Brazil's Botafogo to secure its 1st Recopa Sudamericana title

Argentina's Racing Club has beaten Brazil's Botafogo 2-0 to win the Recopa Sudamericana title by 4-0 on aggregate. The Recopa Sudamericana is played between the winners of the latest Copa Sudamericana and of the more prestigious Copa Libertadores. It was Racing's first Sudamericana title. Matias Zaracho opened the scoring for the visitors Thursday in the 50th minute. Bruno Zuculini scored the second goal at the Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in the 69th minute.

UNC's Banghart remains confident injured starters Ustby, Kelly will return soon as March looms

North Carolina coach Courtney Banghart sounds optimistic that starters Alyssa Ustby and Reniya Kelly will return to the lineup soon. Both players were on the sideline but didn't dress for the eighth-ranked Tar Heels' loss at No. 16 Duke on Thursday night. Ustby hasn't played since exiting early in a win with an unspecified injury against rival N.C. State on Feb. 16. Kelly was an unexpected absence against Duke. Vlatko Andonovski was paid $454,048 during his final nine months as U.S. women's soccer coach and outearned Gregg Berhalter, who received $376,214 during the first nine months of his second term as men's coach. The figures were revealed when the U.S. Soccer Federation released its tax return for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. Andonovski's base pay of $411,471 topped Berhalter's $346,452. The overall figures included deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits. Andonovski announced his resignation in August 2023 after the U.S. was knocked out in the round of 16 at the Women's World Cup, the Americans' earliest exit.

The White Sox announced the diagnosis as a non-displaced fracture with no surgery required. The recovery timetable means Benintendi will almost certainly have to start the season on the injured list. The Pac-12 and some of the teams it is adding filed the lawsuit last year, claiming the poaching clause it agreed to when it signed a scheduling agreement for its football teams for last season was invalid. The clause called for payments to the Mountain West of $10 million for the first team that left, with the amount growing by $500,000 for every additional team.

The NFL's salary cap will be a record-high $279.2 million in 2025, an increase of $23.8 million. The league informed teams of the new cap figure on Thursday during the NFL scouting combine. The cap is up $102 million since 2018. It was $34.608 million in 1994, the first year the NFL had a salary cap.  Total projected player costs, including benefits, are slotted at $362.48 million. Teams must be under the cap by 4 p.m. ET on March 12.

Northern Illinois has accepted an invitation to join the Horizon League in basketball and most other sports except football. The Huskies are set to become the league's 12th member and compete in 14 of its 19 sports starting with the 2026-27 academic year. One notable exception is football, with that program moving from the MAC to the Mountain West in 2026. Northern Illinois has played 39 seasons in the MAC over two stints. It was independent in basketball from 1986 to 1990, spent four years in the Mid-Continent Conference and played in the Horizon League from 1994 to 1997 when it was known as the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

The 28-year-old Garrett appeared in only two games last season after missing more than a year with broken left leg.

Laureus World Sports Academy chairman Sean Fitzpatrick says in a statement that the Italian player's ban resulting from a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency prompted the decision. Sinner and WADA announced the settlement on Feb. 15. The International Tennis Integrity Agency had decided not to suspend Sinner for what the ITIA judged was accidental contamination by a banned anabolic steroid last March.

Soccer shirts depicting the disputed Western Sahara as part of Morocco violated rules against political messaging, a court governing soccer disputes has ruled. The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Wednesday upheld an appeal from Algeria's soccer federation contesting the Confederation of African Football's April 2024 decision allowing a northern Moroccan club to wear jerseys featuring the disputed map. The dispute originated when players for Morocco's RS Berkane club had uniforms seized at the airport before a game against Algeria's USM Alger. The confederation sided with Morocco, leading Algeria to appeal. The court decision comes as Morocco prepares to host this year's Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.

The Pakistan Football Federation has taken a step towards returning to international soccer by unanimously approving constitutional amendments proposed by FIFA. FIFA hit Pakistan on Feb. 6 with a third international suspension in less than eight years after the federation rejected electoral reforms. The federartion decided to approve those amendments by a 23-0 vote at an extraordinary congress in Lahore. The attendees included officials from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation.

Argentina youth star Echeverri joins Man City a year after signing from River Plate

Argentina youth international Claudio Echeverri has completed his permanent move to Manchester City more than a year after signing for the English champion. The 19-year-old Echeverri will add more youthful energy to an ailing City squad which was freshened in the winter transfer window with the arrival of five mostly young players. Echeverri has just been playing in the South American Under-20 Championship where he netted six goals in nine games. He signed for City in January 2024 but was loaned to River Plate for the past year as part of the agreement. City director of football has described Echeverri as "one of the finest talents to emerge from South America in recent years."

Bayern Munich reportedly withdraws contract offer to Joshua Kimmich

German media is reporting that Bayern Munich has retracted its contract extension offer to midfielder Joshua Kimmich, whose deal expires at the end of the season. Kicker magazine is corroborating a report from the Bild tabloid saying Bayern decided at its supervisory board meeting on Monday to withdraw the offer it made to the player because of his hesitation in accepting it. The 30-year-old Kimmich has played more than 400 games for Bayern since joining as a 20-year-old from Leipzig in 2015. He reportedly earns around 20 million euros ($21 million) a year at the Bavarian powerhouse. The proposed new deal reportedly included a modest pay rise.

Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos is expected to be sidelined for several weeks because of a left leg injury from the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals on Wednesday. Madrid says Ceballos underwent tests on Thursday and has been diagnosed with a muscle and tendon injury in his left hamstring. The club says "his recovery will be assessed." Spanish media say Ceballos could be out for up to two months. The 28-year-old Ceballos has been a regular starter for Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti recently. Jones resigned last August after seven months with England, reportedly "unhappy with the unstable working environment." He didn't work with England again but his contract wasn't terminated until December. Now Jones is reunited with coach Rassie Erasmus with the Boks team he helped to win the 2019 and 2023 World Cups. Jones will start his latest stint with South Africa on Saturday. SA Rugby says his appointment concludes at the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027.

Kentucky's Oweh has the last word in career-best performance against Oklahoma, his former team

Oklahoma's fans yapped at Kentucky's Otega Oweh all game long, but the ex-Sooner guard made the final statement. He scored a career-high 28 points and banked in an off-balance floater with six seconds remaining for the winner against his former team as No. 17 Kentucky beat Oklahoma 83-82 on Wednesday night. Oweh was booed loudly during introductions and throughout the game. At one point, Oklahoma students chanted "He's a traitor" while Oweh stood at the free-throw line.
