CENTERVILLE — A semitruck that rolled from southbound I-15 onto the train tracks near Centerville in Davis County caused delays on the FrontRunner train line Monday afternoon, officials said.
The truck was traveling south on the freeway just after 1 p.m. when it veered to the left and scraped the median barrier, then drifted to its right across all lanes of traffic and rolled off the roadway onto its side with its wheels partially blocking the FrontRunner train tracks, according to Utah Highway Patrol officials.
Shortly after the truck rolled, a FrontRunner train traveling south hit the truck's wheels that were blocking the track, Utah Highway Patrol officials said.
Utah Transit Authority spokesman Carl Arky initially said the semitruck was hit by a Union Pacific train which pushed the truck onto the FrontRunner train tracks where a FrontRunner train then grazed the debris.
However, Union Pacific spokesman Justin Jacobs said he does not believe there was a Union Pacific train in the area at the time, according to the reports he's received on the incident.
The crash caused delays for the FrontRunner, according to tweets from the Utah Transit Authority.
UTA also tweeted at:
- 1:38 p.m.: Expect general delays as well as a one-hour delay for the next southbound train from Woods Cross to Provo.
- 2:07 p.m.: Expect a 30-minute delay on the next southbound train from Salt Lake Central to Provo and about 15- to 20-minute delays on the next northbound train from Farmington to Ogden.
- 2:37 p.m.: Expect 40- to 50-minute delays on the next southbound train from South Jordan to Salt Lake Central and an hour-long delay on the next northbound train from Farmington to Ogden.
- 3:49 p.m.: Officials have canceled the bus bridge between Farmington and Woods Cross. The train will travel at restricted speeds between Farmington and Woods Cross for safety reasons. Continue to expect delays in both directions as trains return to their regular schedules.
- 4:28 p.m.: Continue to expect delays ranging from 10 to 30 minutes on north and southbound trains.
- 7:09 p.m.: Delays of 20-30 minutes on FrontRunner will continue throughout the night.
Two right lanes on southbound I-15 near 2100 North in Centerville closed while crews cleared the crash, but the lanes have since been reopened, according to the KSL Traffic Center.
The driver of the semitruck was transported to Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Utah Highway Patrol officials. A dog was also in the truck but was uninjured.
None of the 104 people on the FrontRunner train were injured, officials said.
