1. Sheriff: Gunman kills 2, then himself at video game tourney in Florida

A gunman opened fire Sunday at an online video game tournament as it was being livestreamed from a Florida mall, killing two people and then fatally shooting himself in a rampage that wounded several others, authorities said.

2. Two more fatal motorcycle crashes on Sunday

Two more motorcycle riders were killed on Utah roads on Sunday, bringing the deadly total for 2018 to at least 40.

3. American Fork pastor on leave amid sex abuse allegation

A pastor in American Fork has been placed on administrative leave as allegations of sexual misconduct against children from decades ago are investigated. The Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City placed Father David R. Gaeta on leave on Friday, according to a statement from the diocese.

4. War hero and presidential candidate John McCain has died

Sen. John McCain, who faced down his captors in a Vietnam prisoner of war camp with jut-jawed defiance and later turned his rebellious streak into a 35-year political career that took him to Congress and the Republican presidential nomination, died Saturday after battling brain cancer for more than a year. He was 81.

5. Utah has a 'housing crisis' in a lack of affordable homes

Homelessness continues to be an issue for many Utahns, but community leaders believe it is because there is a dearth of affordable housing options. A number of local and nonprofit programs are working to change that, but they need help from policymakers and acceptance from the public.

1. Savarino brace fuels Real Salt Lake's rout of Colorado for Rocky Mountain supremacy

Jefferson Savarino scored twice, and Corey Baird added a goal and two assists, and Real Salt Lake took out its road-scoring woes with a 6-0 thumping Saturday night over nine-man Colorado to retain possession of the Rocky Mountain Cup at DSG Park in Commerce City, Colorado.

2. Looking back: Utah football now recognized for its 2008 'national poll championship'

The NCAA recently released its 2018 football records book, and Utah was awarded a “national poll championship” for its 2008 season (page 115). Of course, Florida was the consensus poll and actual champion after defeating Oklahoma 24-21 in the BCS National Championship game, but one “major selector” — Anderson/Hester — had the Utes ranked higher at the end of the season.

3. New high school football team brings pride, 'Order' to Farmington

The Phoenix always knew it was going to be an uphill battle.

But Friday night’s 36-0 loss in Farmington High School’s inaugural home football game wasn’t about being shutout by Northridge.

4. Miners' defense poaches Leopards, 30-8

The two football mammoths clashed, but ultimately the outcome was much of the same as last season’s title game as the Miners beat the Leopards, 30-8.

5. BYU's quarterback pick is in: Tanner Mangum sits atop depth chart

BYU football has a starting quarterback — and he’s the known quantity.

Tanner Mangum was named as the starter for the 2018 season opener Sept. 1 at Arizona, the team announced Friday afternoon via Twitter.
