BENJAMIN, Utah County — Two more motorcycle riders were killed on Utah roads Sunday, bringing the deadly total for 2018 to at least 40.
The first incident happened about 2:40 p.m. A Toyota Tacoma was making a left turn from state Route 164 near Benjamin to get onto I-15, when the truck turned into the path of an on-coming motorcycle, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Brady Zaugg.
The motorcyclist, who was not immediately identified, broadsided the Tacoma and was killed, he said.
Just before 5 p.m., a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle was traveling on S.R. 14 just east of Cedar City, when he attempted to pass his friend, who was also on a motorcycle, at a high rate of speed, Zaugg said.
"The roadway in the area of the crash curves significantly. The driver of the Suzuki motorcycle lost control of his bike. The Suzuki motorcycle went off the right shoulder and vaulted. The driver was ejected from the motorcycle and he sustained fatal injuries when he collided with the ground," he said.
The rider's identity was not immediately released.
Prior to Sunday, there had been 38 fatal motorcycle crashes in Utah. through Aug. 20, up from previous years.
